Hey Everyone, Yannick Here.
Now Rupaul’s Drag Race is almost one of my guilty pleasures to watch, but it is really not. The premise of the show is that it is a competition for drag queens, and if you’re thinking like I was when I heard the idea of the show you’re probably saying “Eww what the heck, drag queens are freaky”. As far as I have seen the drag queen frequency has not been increasing lately, however this show is an extremely good television show. It is a good television show because it has a purpose and actually succeeds in showing the World about Drag Culture and relevant social issues (Particularly because the show is filmed in the U.S).
Remember how you were a kid and if you watched Fresh Prince of Bel-Air there was a lot of jargon that was used by only Black folks (i.m.o) or a lot of societal racial issues which were often addressed. That was super cool and what made the show so genuine and popular. Well, Rupaul’s Drag Race does the same thing as most of the drag queens (if not all?) are gay/trans; so, the show kinda revolves around that at the start, but then they have this runway where they design these sick dresses and fashions and etc. Some of these people are really talented!

Now, the reason I’m writing this is because my favourite contestant Valentina was just eliminated last week :(. So I’m probably not going to watch for the rest of the season, but this episode really hit me hard because I kind of compared her to myself. Valentina was a contestant that everyone thought was going to make it to the finale, similar to how everyone thought I was going to be a doctor at one time :). Well, Valentina didn’t memorize her lipsync song to stay in the competition and one of the best competitors was eliminated. Sometimes I was wondering why I never achieved my goals at times and it’s truly because I didn’t prepare and eventually got scared. So as you can see this show can relate a lot to the modern North American, independent of sexual orientation. Whether you have natural talent or not, there will come to a point in our lives where we either didn’t prepare enough or didn’t expect to need to prepare. These shows have important lessons if you take the time to actually think about them.
So for you Drag Race fans, do you think Valentina had the most Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent? Or do you think she was just too inexperienced, comment below let’s chat :). I’d love to hear fellow bloggers opinions.
